Dr. Denison DDS, PC

Periodontal Care

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, affects approximately 34 percent of Americans over the age of 30, according to the Center for Disease Control. Gum disease – chronic infection of the gums, teeth, and jawbone by bacteria in built-up tartar – is characterized by loose teeth and swollen, red, bleeding gums. If you are experiencing these symptoms, contact our office as soon as possible, since early intervention is crucial to preventing the disease's progression.

Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease
To diagnose periodontal disease, Dr. Denison takes a detailed medical history to note any past or present conditions that may contribute to gum disease. He checks the gums for infection, and tests the teeth for movement. He also checks the depth of periodontal pockets. Pockets with depths greater than 3mm indicate gum disease. Finally, Dr. Denison may take X-rays to identify problems within the teeth, gums and jaw.

Phase I Periodontal Care
Our practice provides Phase I periodontal care to treat gingivitis and gum disease in its earliest stage. Phase I periodontal care is primarily education-based, aimed at informing patients about the cause and progression of gum disease, risk factors, and treatment options should the problem worsen. In Phase 1 treatment, Dr. Denison may use non-surgical methods such as scaling and root planing to control inflammation. To reduce the effect of bacteria on the gum and bone tissue and prevent infection, he may prescribe antibiotics that are placed in the periodontal pockets after treatment. If needed, he may also replace or repair missing or damaged restorations and perform endodontic treatment.

Childrens Dentistry
We are happy to take care of your childrens dental needs. Dental hygiene is an important lifelong habit and we show your children about oral health and how to care for their teeth in order to build a strong foundation for a healthy smile. We teach them healthy eating habits and proper brushing and flossing techniques. Dr. Denison and his staff work very hard to relieve the anxieties of both the child and the parent when fillings are necessary.

Fluoride
Fluoride is an important mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel and prevent corrosion of the teeth by acids secreted by bacteria in the mouth. It is most important that children between six months and sixteen years of age receive fluoride treatment to strengthen their developing teeth. We recommend fluoride to every child and to adults.

Sealants
Sealants are thin, quick-bonding coats of plastic applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars. Sealants guard hard-to-brush areas in the back of the mouth against plaque, bacteria, and decay. To achieve optimal protection against decay, it is best to have your child's sealants placed as soon as his or her permanent molars emerge. We recommend sealants to adults as well as a easy noninvasive preventive option to protect the teeth.
